Surface Hardening

Create a hardened, wear resistant surface while maintaining a ductile core.

Many power transmission components are manufactured with heat treated surfaces to increase durability and reduce wear. Ramsey has over thirty years of experience in the precision surface hardening of gears, sprockets, pulleys, and shafts. Utilizing computer controlled flame hardening equipment Ramsey can economically harden a wide range of part sizes.

  • Gears
  • Sprockets
  • Pulleys
  • Shafts
  • From 1′ diameter up to 30″ diameter
  • Part Weight up to 2,000 lbs.
  • Surface Hardness of Rc 60 or greater

Flame hardening has a number of advantages over alternative forms of heat treatment. Because the periphery of each part is fully heated, there is minimal distortion of internal bores or machining. Also, unlike through hardening processes the core of flame hardened parts remains soft enough for additional machining after the heat treatment. Sprockets, pulleys, or gears that require close tolerance bores can be machined after the heat treatment; grinding is not required. Flame hardening also employs flexible, quick set up, fixturing that accommodates a range of part sizes; this reduces costs and allows economical heat treatment of even small quantities of parts.

Features of Flame Hardening

  • Hardened wear resistant surfaces with a ductile core.
  • Economical.
  • Localized heating with minimal distortion.
  • Small lots and low set-up costs.
  • Allows secondary machining operations.
